"Back Off": Assange Attorney Michael Ratner Urges U.K., U.S. to Respect Asylum Decision, Int'l Law

Michael Ratner, a member of WikiLeaks founder Julian Assange’s legal team, reacts to the breaking news that Ecuador has approved Assange’s request for political asylum two months after Assange took refuge in its London embassy. Britain says it still plans to extradite Assange to Sweden, where he faces questioning for alleged sexual misconduct. "The British ought to just back off, and the U.S. ought to just back off," Ratner says. "For the British to say that they’re going to go into the embassy and get out someone who’s been granted asylum would turn the refugee convention and asylum completely on its head. ... [Assange] has a right to leave that embassy, get on a plane and go to Ecuador. ... That’s the law." [includes rush transcript]

On the way home, I took the Ridge Trail on my bicycle. It took longer than expected. The trail definitely has a few challenging spots. I saw a doe and fawn, and they paused to return my curious stare, without running away. Maybe it is because I said, Hello Dear!

The Southern Nevada Water Authority wants to siphon away ancient groundwater from the Great Basin in Nevada and Utah and pump it 300 miles to fuel new Las Vegas sprawl, This will fundamentally damage the region's water systems and all the animals that have depended on it for thousands of years.

We have to keep the Great Basin's fragile web of life intact -- take action now.

The pipeline would drain more than 37 billion gallons of water a year and export it to the driest desert in North America, sucking away the lifeblood of a wild area the size of Vermont. Greater sage grouse, Bonneville cutthroat trout, pronghorn and elk would suffer. Fourteen types of desert fish and 25 species of springsnails could die out completely.

This dangerous project is at an important decision point. We need your help today to stop the right-of-way application for the pipeline.
