Just Label It: Who will be 1,000,000
The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) is preparing to approve genetically engineered salmon, which would be the first genetically engineered animal on supermarket shelves in the United States. The salmon is engineered to produce hormones year-round that cause the fish to grow at twice its natural rate. But without labels, we'll never know.
We need to speak out now, because there's just days until the FDA must respond publicly to a petition calling for labeling of genetically engineered foods -- and we need to make sure the FDA knows how ordinary Americans feel about this issue before that deadline.
That's why I submitted a comment to the FDA demanding that genetically engineered foods be labeled. And in about 30 seconds and with just a few clicks, you can join me. Will you tell the FDA that you support mandatory labeling of genetically engineered foods too?

Please, click on that link and contact the FDA today. They need to hear from more people like you and me.

Obama Offers to Cut Social Security, Medicare
Tell Senator Reid: Don't let the interest rate double on federal student loans
This is unbelievable. The interest rates on federal student loans will double this summer if Congress doesn't take action.
Congress, led by Republican leadership in the House, is planning to let the College Cost Reduction and Access Act legislation expire on July 1, effectively doubling the interest rates on loans for millions of Americans. This will result in an average of $5,000 in additional payments for students who are scheduled to pay their loans backs in 5 years, and $11,000 for those who are paying back in 10.
We can't let this happen. I just signed a petition urging Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid to pick up the fight on behalf of millions of American students. I hope you do too.

Speak Up for Loggerhead Sea Turtles
Along the East Coast, loggerhead sea turtles are facing an uncertain
future as severe storms, erosion, and sea level rise caused by climate
change increasingly place this cherished species on the brink of
extinction. Right now, we have the opportunity to curb climate pollution by
harnessing the enormous wind potential along the Atlantic coast--which
would produce clean energy for decades. Take action to protect imperiled sea turtles today: http://bit.ly/wgYNgr Our leaders need to know we support moving forward with offshore wind
facilities off the Atlantic coast in a wildlife-friendly way. Just click here to send a message: http://bit.ly/wgYNgr Thanks!

Elizabeth Warren has asked Congress to stop the secret bailout of AIG, and so should you.
At the height of the financial crisis, we spent billions of dollars bailing out failed insurance giant AIG after its reckless bets on mortgage-backed securities went south.
And now, according to recent reports, the Treasury is engaging in a second, secret bailout of the firm -- one that's costing U.S. taxpayers billions, and artificially boosting AIG's profits, leading directly to higher share prices and bigger executive bonuses for some of the same people who ran the company into the ground.
Elizabeth Warren and three other members of the Congressional Oversight Panel for the Troubled Asset Relief Program she chaired -- including two members appointed by Congressional Republicans -- have denounced this stealth bailout of AIG and asked Congress to intervene.
I agree, so I just signed a petition telling Congress to stop the secret AIG bailout
I hope you'll sign the petition too.

Tell Eric Holder: Release secret memos authorizing assassination of Americans without judicial review
Not even the Bush Administration had the audacity to publicly and explicitly assert the right to execute Americans citizens without judicial review. But in a speech at Northwestern University this week, Attorney General Eric Holder offered a detailed defense of the Obama Administration's unprecedented step of authorizing targeted executions of American citizens through a secretive CIA assassination program.
Holder defended a secret assassination program of Americans abroad by arguing constitutional protections of "due process" do not include "judicial process." The constitution does not allow the executive to be judge, jury and executioner.
The ACLU has filed a Freedom of Information Act lawsuit seeking information about the assassination program, but Holder's Justice Department has responded to the request by saying they can neither confirm nor deny the existence of any records. We need to pressure the Department of Justice to release all legal documents that related to the purported "justification" of the Obama Administration's extra-judicial killings.
It is unacceptable and unconstitutional for the executive branch of the U.S. government to secretly kill American citizens abroad without due process that includes impartial judicial review. I just told Holder: Release the documents the Obama Administration is using to justify its authority to kill American citizens without judicial review.
Will you join me and speak up to defend our Constitution today? Thank you.

Michael L. Love: Pomegranate nut fudge with blueberries - #nut #caramel #fudge #berries #blueberries
Healthy pomegranate nut fudge with blueberries is the latest variation on the weekend fudge indulgence, but it is also a wonderful component of a good diet. Cocoa lovers can add a serving of peanut butter to the fudge, and the portion is expanded to 4 squares. You will not be disappointed, but remember that you have used your nut serving for the day! Pecans and walnuts add a delightful texture. A bit of fresh squeezed orange juice enhances the chocolate flavor considerably, but it also takes the edge off of the secret ingredient, a dash of fresh ground pepper. If you add pepper and citrus juice, don't forget to make a small amount of fudge, because it should be eaten right away, not a problem for most people I should think ;-}. I substituted pomegranate juice concentrate for agave nectar, which adds enormously to the healthful polyphenolic content of the fudge, and remarkably, the large punicalagin tannin molecules are known to be absorbed into the blood stream and exert their beneficial effect in the body. The pomegranate concentrate also makes for sweet fudge, tangy, and tasty! If you are interested in the recipe, here is the link. Flavonoid Blast Fudge Regards,

Michael L. Love: Without your health, you have nothingI find it odd that seemingly intelligent people are willing to criticize the prominence that health-related information receives on the internet. Some of them are technologists, capitalists, politicians, or hardcore physical scientists, who certainly have pursuits outside the realm of healthful conduct, and financial interests that are at odds with the public good. Perhaps they think that they will find enjoyment of their technology without good health. How absurd! As for the rest of us, we will continue our zealous pursuit of health-related information, so that we can continue to improve the fundamental essence of what we are. We will continue to watch over our communities and protect our children from harm. In due course, we will see which group is better enjoying their technology. Parsley, a brain food?from Michael L. Love/proclus/GNU-Darwin tumblr blog Is parsley a brain food? I have been on the parsley program for several weeks now, and there have been small but noticeable changes, which might indicate an intelligence boost. One obvious indicator would be something new for me, prolific contribution of blog articles, and I found myself writing this on the train this morning, something that I never envisioned. It reminds me of my fresh out of grad school days, porting thousands of software packages to a novel OS platform, while working on a scientific publication. Parsley apigenin, like other flavonoids, slows the breakdown of the feel good hormones, such as the body’s endogenous cannabinoids and opiods. Additionally, it acts similarly in the synapses of the brain, slowing the breakdown of the neurotransmitter chemicals that promote neural activity. Although these effects are mild, they do appear to be significant and dose dependent, so that people on the high dose regimen described in this blog will benefit most. It is safe to say that I love parsley, no doubt due to some of the above effects, and it reminds me very much of my early GNU-Darwin hacking days. Now, we will be hacking the body, hacking longevity, intelligence, strength, and health. Read further in the blog for more information about how this is to be done. It should be noted that effects like these are best experienced within the context of a healthy lifestyle, which means fitness, a healthy diet, and a supplementation program that is consistent with those aims. In fact, nothing should be at odds with these aims. Such vigor is the true objective, no? NO exposure to X-rays is safe. My advice is to stop flying. The added benefit is no contribution to an immense pollution. The news pages are littered with stories of activists that relied over-much on air travel, and they were taken into custody by hostile governments or had their passports revoked. It is such a waste, especially when it is so much better to use the internet to spread ideas. Now our privacy is being aggregiously violated at the airports in obvious violation of both the spirit and letter of the Bill of Rights. It is time to say enough and stop giving our money to this evil machine. If you are with me, you will stop flying today. How did we get into this awful situation? It is by neglecting some obvious truths and warnings that we have been recieving for years. Airplanes are such easy targets for those who have a complaint against the US government, and it is no surprise to see that they are a favorite point of attack. Air travel is one of the worst sources of pollution that was ever invented. We have known these facts for decades, but we have neglected them, so that today people are ready to paraded themselves through X-ray camaras in order to get on an airplane. Clearly air travel has become a symbol of western excess. How absurd it has become. As for me, superman can keep his X-ray eyes far away. He should not be surprised when someone attempts to pluck them out.Regards, proclus http://www.gnu-darwin.org/

Hunger manipulation for profit An important fact which may be elluding us may be that excessive hunger results directly from a market-driven manipulation of appetites. The equation is simple; drive hunger and sell more food to make more money, even if it makes people fat and unhealthy. There are conclusive examples that demonstrate that this is actually happening in isolated anecdotal cases, of which MacDonalds, Burger King, and CocaCola are prominent examples. These examples are important, because they demonstrate that this manipulation of hunger and thirst for profit is INTENTIONAL. A common example is the use of excessive salt in foods, such as movie popcorn, to promote thirst and sell soft drinks, drinks that do not adequately quench thirst either, and may in fact promote thirst. Sell more, buy more, eat more, get fat and unhealthy, while someone else gets rich. By our over-indulgence, we are being fed upon. This manipulation may not always be intentional, and some may be only following a market formulation, which appears to be successful in the sense of immediate profitability. For example, many soda makers may not be aware that their recipies were designed ultimately not to quench thirst, but rather to promote it. They stay in business, due to their successful market exploitation model, which was stumbled on or discovered. These incidental examples are not the key point. Further investigation into the systematic manipulation of appetites is indicated, in order to determine the extent and societal cost of these practices. I suspect it is a wide spread problem with profound effects which are often highly adverse. Our understanding of the biochemical basis of hunger and thirst adds a new level of threat in a regimen where businesses may manipulate our appetites at the molecular level. They simply have too much to gain from such pursuits, and in the profit-driven model, it is irresistable for them. It is likely that appetite manipulation research is already underway. Some criticism of this thesis takes the following form. How could anyone stay in business by selling food or drink that does not satisfy? This is a ham-handed attempt to hide the obvious fact, that a more profitable business model is a situation where people will only be satisfied with more than they need, even if it is contrary to their well-being. Appetites are particularly amenable to such exploitation because people derive satisfaction directly from eating and drinking. Only a careful approach is needed to balance satiety and appetite in order to maximize profit. Simply put, you may be satisfied temporarily, but if you get hungry sooner, you will buy more. You will eat more initially in order to avoid it, and you will likely eat more than is healthful. You will be more hungry than you should be later, but that does not matter to the seller, and if fact, that is what he is counting on. It is a simple fallacy to say that market forces will drive such businesses out, and meanwhile people are suffering now.It is clearly possible to obtain profits through the manipulation of appetites, and craven business interests have demonstrated repeatedly that they are willing to do something profitable, even if it is detrimental to people in general. There are countless examples of this, tobacco, alcohol, and polluting industries to name just a few. You may be convinced that their insidious products are harmless by their advertising campaigns and PR. Hostile business practices work, and some business people even consider this as the normative goal in a regimen where only profits matter. Let's get these crocodiles under control before they eat us up.Regards, proclus http://www.gnu-darwin.org/ Published Thursday, March 31, 2011 11:12 AM by proclus [Edit Post] Filed Under: General Health and Wellness, Weight Gain Muscle Mass, Weight Loss, Specific Health Concern

proclus said: The more I think about this article, the more I think I am on to something, and the implications multiply. We can have a discussion about how do avoid these dangers right here, if you like. For example, it is implied to avoid eating at establishments that server alcohol, because they are likely to spike the food with too much salt in order to sell more drinks, twice the problem! This has gotten me interested in the relationship of fatty and high carb foods to thirst, so hopefully we will be learning more about that soon.If you can think of more suggestions, please post them. One of the things that prompted me to write this article is that I was unable to find any germane links in Google. If you know of others who have written helpfully about this topic, please feel free to post some links here.Increased knowledge of hunger manipulation and appetite manipulation in general could be very helpful to people engaged in the following activities; weight reduction and loss, bodybuilding, diet programs, and health in general. If you know anyone who would be interested in this, be sure and give them a link to the article. The more people that we have thinking about this subject, the better.BTW, I am thinking of getting a Bowflex tension rod apparatus in order to improve my strength training regimen. If you have any better solution, please let me know.Regards, proclus http://www.gnu-darwin.org/ March 31, 2011 12:44 PM EST [Remove this Comment]
proclus said: Would you drink radioactive KoolAid? This is no rhetorical question, as the disaster in Japan so easily demonstrates. I wonder how many people believe the government reports that there is no risk to human health. I have to say that I laughed, unfortunately, when I heard the government reports on the radio, because I knew that they were obviously lying. What about the X-ray scanners? The BP oil spill? on and on? US practices of torture? No risk to human health? Do you suppose that such thugs would shrink from feeding you toxic food and calling it healthful and refreshing? Are you drinking the radioactive KoolAid? Regards, Michael L. Love |
