via (title unknown) by jacob on 7/18/12

Drone Wars: Civil Liberties Groups Sue CIA, Pentagon Over Targeted Killings

Two leading U.S. civil liberties organizations have filed a lawsuit against David Petraeus, Leon Panetta and other senior CIA and military officials over a series of drone strikes in Yemen that killed three American citizens.

The suit, filed Wednesday in Washington and New York by the American Civil Liberties Union and the Center for Constitutional Rights, alleges that the “targeted killing” of the Americans, including suspected al Qaeda operative Anwar al-Awlaki and his teenage son, violated the Constitution because it took place outside the context of authorized armed conflict. The two groups, who filed the suit on behalf of the family members of the dead Americans, are asking the courts to determine for the first time whether the killings were legal.

Tell Obama: Reject Shell's Excuses

All across America people are begging President Barack Obama to say no to oil giant Shell's plans to drill in the Arctic this summer -- so far, to no avail. Today we have another compelling reason to say Shell No!

The company has admitted that its Arctic drillship Noble Discoverer and its oil-spill response vessel Nanuq can't meet the air-pollution standards in its Clean Air Act permit from the Environmental Protection Agency. Shell's own documents show that the company knew back in 2010 that it couldn't meet its permit requirements -- but instead of fixing the problem, it's waited till the eleventh hour to ask the EPA for a free pass to just let it drill in the Arctic, in violation of its permit.

This is a classic bait-and-switch tactic, and we can't let Shell get away with it.

Shell has told the media it's certain the EPA will let it move forward -- despite the fact that its drillship is going to emit three times the amount of harmful nitrogen oxides allowed, and its oil-response vessel is going to emit 10 times the amount of particulate matter pollution. What's more, just this weekend the Noble Discoverer came loose from its moorings in Dutch Harbor, Alaska, and drifted perilously close to shore.

Does the Obama administration really think that a drillship that can't be properly anchored in port is prepared for the harsh conditions of the stormy, ice-choked Arctic Ocean? Shell should not be permitted to play out its comedy of errors in the fragile home of threatened polar bears and walruses.

Please take action to tell the president enough is enough.

America’s #Drones Are Homeward Bound

via (title unknown) by Craig Brown on 7/17/12

Ann Wright

Americans have been protesting and getting arrested at U.S. drone bases and research institutions for years, and some members of Congress are starting to respond to the pressure.

But it’s not that drones are being used to extrajudicially execute people, including Americans, in Afghanistan, Pakistan, Yemen and Somalia that has U.S. lawmakers concerned. Rather it’s the possible and probable violation of Americans’ privacy in the United States by unlawful drone surveillance that has caught the attention of legislators.

In this statement, Dr. Stein says that, "Whistleblowers are indispensable for democracy. They enable the people to defend themselves against government malfeasance and tyranny. Those U.S. cables released to Wikileaks contained more information on the wars in Iraq, Afghanistan, and other countries than all the media organizations in the world combined have been able to unearth. And they are all too filled with malfeasance, tyranny and war crimes. So it may be that Bradley Manning was actually doing his duty, since he swore in his Oath of Enlistment to "support and defend the Constitution of the United States against all enemies, foreign and domestic." Summer Garden - #green #greens #tomatoes #peppers

Guess I did something right this year. The garden turned out pretty good. Here is proof that I don't kill every green thing that I touch ;-). The reds are coming out en force. This year there are 12 pots.  Two kitty litter containers full of water are sufficient to water 12 pots, plus a little extra water.

Really, I did not believe my eyes, when I first saw that the tomatoes and peppers were coming in clusters.  As most of you know, I don't keep many secrets. If you want to know how I did it, I'd be glad to discuss.

This year I feel authentically green, but I must give some credit to my Mormon upbringing. Gardening is encouraged, even if it is only in humble pots.

Strike a blow against Citizens United

Dear Friend,

The U.S. Supreme Court's disastrous Citizens United v. FEC ruling has unleashed a torrent of anonymous campaign spending into our political system. Corporations have been able to exert a massive influence on our electoral process without being subject to any accountability for that influence.

Progressive champion Senator Sheldon Whitehouse is fighting back by pushing Congress to pass the DISCLOSE Act. And he has asked the public to join him as citizen co-sponsors.

Become a citizen co-sponsor of the DISCLOSE Act of 2012 to end secret election spending.

http://ping.fm/NOBeW

Urgent vote on DISCLOSE

Hey,

Corporations and special interests are trying to buy our elections with secret donations.

We need the DISCLOSE Act to force them to reveal their political spending -- and cut down on the unlimited special-interest influence. Americans deserve to know the funders behind the TV ads flooding our airwaves.

The Senate will be voting on the DISCLOSE Act as early as this Monday, July 16.

I just signed a petition from a big group of Democratic senators and other organizations telling the Senate to pass the DISCLOSE Act.

Will you join me and sign the petition, too?

Justice

Friends-

Wikipedia founder Jimmy Wales is urging us to sign on to this important Internet freedom petition:

Richard O'Dwyer is a 24 year old British student at Sheffield Hallam University in the UK. He is facing extradition to the USA and up to ten years in prison, for creating a website – TVShack.net – which linked (similarly to a search-engine) to places to watch TV and movies online.

O'Dwyer is not a US citizen, he's lived in the UK all his life, his site was not hosted there, and most of his users were not from the US. America is trying to prosecute a UK citizen for an alleged crime which took place on UK soil.

The internet as a whole must not tolerate censorship in response to mere allegations of copyright infringement. As citizens we must stand up for our rights online.

Please click here to join me in demanding that British authorities refuse to extradite O'Dwyer, and that US officials cease persecuting him:

http://act.demandprogress.org/letter/odwyer/?referring_akid=1423.45919.5JLWaR...

When operating his site, Richard O'Dwyer always did his best to play by the rules: on the few occasions he received requests to remove content from copyright holders, he complied. His site hosted links, not copyrighted content, and these were submitted by users.

Copyright is an important institution, serving a beneficial moral and economic purpose. But that does not mean that copyright can or should be unlimited. It does not mean that we should abandon time-honored moral and legal principles to allow endless encroachments on our civil liberties in the interests of the moguls of Hollywood.

This is but one of several recent attempts by the US government and Hollywood to expand the definition of copyright infringement to include those who simply link to other sites that are accused of housing infringing content. Those who are being prosecuted face huge fines, and multiple years in prison. These actions represent an unacceptable attack on Internet freedom -- and one of questionable legality. Congress should act to reign in US prosecutors and protect Internet freedom -- and the UK should refuse to extradite O'Dwyer.

Richard O'Dwyer is the human face of the battle between the content industry and the interests of the general public. Earlier this year, in the fight against SOPA and PIPA, the public won its first big victory. This could be our second.

This is why I am petitioning the UK's Home Secretary Theresa May to stop the extradition of Richard O'Dwyer, and asking the United States to end his prosecution. I hope you will join me -- please click here to stand up for Richard O'Dwyer and Internet freedom:

http://act.demandprogress.org/letter/odwyer/?referring_akid=1423.45919.5JLWaR...

Thanks.

Tell Sweden: Promise No US Extradition of Assange!

Many are claiming that Julian Assange faces no danger of being extradited from Sweden to the US if handed over to Swedish authorities. But recent comments by US officials, including the US Justice Department and California Senator Dianne Feinstein, reaffirm US intentions to try to prosecute Assange under the Espionage Act.

Join me in urging the Swedish authorities to pledge not to extradite Julian to the US by signing our petition below; then forward the petition to @Sweden and @CarlBildt so we can generate discussion in Sweden about the danger of extradition to the US.

Tell your Representative: Americans need a raise

Dear Friend,

The need to keep pressing Congress on behalf of working class Americans to raise the minimum wage remains urgent. At just $7.25 an hour, or roughly $15,000 per year, the current federal minimum wage is leaving millions of hard working Americans in poverty.

While we continue to work with Senator Tom Harkin and key allies to push the issue in the U. S. Senate, a key member of the House Democratic Leadership - Representative George Miller from California - just introduced parallel legislation on the House side that increases the minimum wage from $7.25 to $9.80 by 2014 then indexes it to inflation thereafter. He has asked his colleagues in the House to co-sponsor the Fair Minimum Wage Act of 2012.

It is crucial for us to generate support for Representative Miller's effort because it will provide broader momentum for increasing the minimum wage in both chambers of Congress.

I just signed a petition urging my Repesentative to cosponsor Representative Miller's legislation to raise the minimum wage. I hope you do too. You can sign the petition and find out more information at the link below.

Navy to deafen 15,900 whales and dolphins and kill 1,800 more

Hi,

The Navy is required to include comments on their Environmental Impact Statement (EIS) re: the use of high frequency underwater sound for testing in Hawaii, the California and Atlantic Coasts, and the Gulf of Mexico. According to their estimates it will deafen more than 15,900 whales and dolphins and kill 1,800 more over the next 5 years. Whales and dolphins depend on sound to navigate and live. Your signature and comment will have to be included in the EIS and could stop this Naval program, potentially saving the lives of these ocean creatures. The comments must be in by July 10, 2012.

That's why I signed a petition to U.S. Navy EIS Comments.

Tell the EPA: Keep Diesel Out of Our Water

Hydraulic fracturing, or "fracking," is a dangerous drilling technique threatening water, air, wildlife and public health all over the United States. It's done by blasting millions of gallons of a chemical-water-sand mixture deep into the Earth to break up rock formations to harvest oil and gas.

In 2005, in a law known as the "Halliburton loophole," Congress exempted the chemicals used in fracking from regulation under the Safe Drinking Water Act --with one exception: diesel fuel. The Environmental Protection Agency has just asked for public comment on how it should regulate the use of diesel fuel in fracking.

Evidence is mounting throughout the country that fracking chemicals are making their way into aquifers and drinking water, and diesel contains the toxic substances benzene, toluene, ethylbenzene and xylene. Risking more chemical contamination of our drinking water is a no-go.

Take action to tell the EPA to take the immediate step of banning the use of diesel in fracking fluid.
