Do you trust a #mining giant with our natural heritage? - #arctic #salmon #wildlife #BP #boycottbp #oilspill

The following message, urging Americans to tell mining giant Anglo American to abandon its plans for digging the disastrous Pebble Mine in Alaska's wildlife Eden of Bristol Bay, was sent to you by http://www.SaveBioGems.org

Dear Friend,

Last spring we ratcheted up the pressure on Anglo American and its disastrous plan to build a mega-mine in Alaska's pristine Bristol Bay watershed. We presented a Petition -- signed by 100,000 concerned Americans -- at Anglo's Shareholder's Meeting on Earth Day!

But in the wake of the Gulf oil spill disaster, we need to do more. It's time to tell Anglo American we're not buying its promises of environmental responsibility. BP made plenty of promises, too. Then it proved that corporate claims ring hollow and worst-case scenarios do happen. Tell Anglo American you don't want another corporate giant gambling with the future of a priceless ecosystem.

http://www.savebiogems.org/bristolbay/pebble/action

Oil, gas and mining companies like to say: Trust us.

Anglo American is promising plenty of studies and environmental impact statements. They will claim that a massive release of mining waste is a 'worst case scenario' that will never happen. They will claim that Bristol Bay - the world's largest salmon fishery and home to abundant bears, moose and caribou - is in no danger from the colossal Pebble Mine.

How gullible do they think we are?

Every large copper and gold mine on Earth has suffered spills and other disasters, including acid runoff and mercury contamination. Anglo American's own plans say that the Pebble Mine will spew some 10 billion tons of mining waste, laced with toxic chemicals, that must be stored behind massive earthen dams FOREVER in an active earthquake zone. Nothing lasts forever. The only question is, when will those dams fail? The wildlife, fishermen and Native communities of Bristol Bay cannot afford to find out the answer, because they stand to pay the ultimate price in a devastated ecosystem.

Please stand in solidarity with them by telling Anglo American you won't let them roll the dice with Bristol Bay.

http://www.savebiogems.org/bristolbay/pebble/action

Polluters like to think our attention spans are short. They believe they can wait until "the storm blows over," and then go back to business as usual.

Let them know they're wrong. Tell Anglo that, after the Gulf spill, you're not buying any more corporate promises. Sincerely, Peter Lehner NRDC Executive Director

You Live So Close! Mobilize and Volunteer for Peace on 10.2.10 (Please forward widely!)

"We have guided missiles and misguided men." --- Martin Luther King

A clear demonstration of this is the FY2011 budget with *$726 billion* slated for war and military spending vs. *$51 billion* for education... You do the math... Hint: Resources wasted in war and bloated Pentagon spending short-changes our basic needs at home. Most significant are the human resources lost and lives destroyed by endless war. The world cannot prosper under violence and endless threats of violence, and our peaceful anti-war message is a cornerstone of the people's agenda.

*October 2*, One Nation Working Together March on Washington DC, is the Peace Movement's opportunity to mobilize for the largest gathering of progressive organizations in a long time - joining unionists, civil rights groups, immigrant rights leaders and social justice advocates to remind Washington to *Fund Jobs, Not War*. Our visible presence is required - The Peace Table needs volunteer help.
With *only 6 days left*, 10.2.10 has the potential to be the largest demonstration in decades, but we need your help to make sure it's big. Help create a clear, strong voice and visible presence for peace and prosperity to One Nation. - Please volunteer [ http://salsa.democracyinaction.org/o/302/p/salsa/web/common/public/signup?signup_page_KEY=5474 ] to help ensure our message is heard and seen on 10.2.10!

Michael L. Love: Healthful benefits of grapefruit naringenin - #health #food #recipes #diet #science #juice #fruits

The bioflavonoid naringenin is an obvious candidate for molecules activism, because of its ready availability in grapefruit, but also because if its many healthful benefits. Recently, naringenin was demonstrated to interfere with the spread of hepatitis C virus (HCV) in liver cells, and a clinical trial is currently underway to find out if grapefruit consumption can be therapeutic to those who are afflicted with the viral infection. For those who are frequent readers of this blog, it should come as no surprise that flavonoid molecules, such as naringenin, could have anti-viral activity. Moreover, it has already been mentioned that this flavonoid molecule, like kaempferol, is superior to EGCG for the enhancement of catalase activity, which is important for protection of our cells from free radicals and peroxide. Grapefruit naringenin is a rising star!...

CREDO: Become a citizen endorser of Stop Texas #Oil - Stop CA prop 23 - #gas #koch #BP Spill #boycottbp #oilspill

Dear Friend,

Texas oil companies are spending millions of dollars to reverse
California's landmark global warming law with a deceptive ballot
initiative this November.

Fighting them won't be easy, but we can do it by showing how many
Californians oppose this dirty proposition, and exposing the out-of-state
oil companies behind it.

I just added my name as a citizen endorser of the "Stop Texas Oil: Hell No

I thought you might want to add your name as well, and help build the
grassroots campaign against the Texas oil companies who are trying to

Concern about the 'Bill To Combat Online Infringement' - #eff #fsf #dmca

Who are the REAL pirates? Those rallying behind the 'Bill To Combat
Online Infringement' seem too quick to label internet users as
pirates, an archaic term which refers to terrible crimes on the high
seas. Exploiters from Hollywood and the likes of Viacom rallied
behind the Senate bill. Entities such as these are well known for
their seemingly endless capacity to harm both their customers and the
artists that toil and create the works. If we are to call something
piracy, surely THAT is piracy. Can we trust people given to such over
the top rhetoric, and with so little respect for our rights. Can we
sensibly give them the keys to our internet access?
There are concerns that the proposed bill violates the safe harbor
provisions of the DMCA, forcing ISPs to police their users and the
network, and holding them accountable what their users are doing.
There are also concerns about inflating copyright violations into an
act of piracy, a grave crime. If I make a copy of something, is it
such a grave crime as that? Please use some sense! This is not
piracy.
The bill has broad implications. For example, I am happy to have
copies of GNU-Darwin wherever they exist, on whatever server,
whereever. I am the originator of much of the work and you are free
to copy it as you like. I give you the source code. That is software
freedom. Servers offering GNU-Darwin torrents are likely to be
targeted under the bill, contrary to my wishes and common sense. We
cannot let this happen.
We need to remember who we are and exert our energies to defeat this
bill. Moreover, we need to defeat the idea that it is akin to piracy
to copy a file. It is simply a false notion, and freedom to copy is
at the heart of free and open source software.

Take Action to Protect America's Western Arctic from Big Oil

Big Oil has the western Arctic in its sights, but we have an opportunity right now to ensure lasting protections for the area's exceptional ecological and wilderness values.

The 23.5-million-acre National Petroleum Reserve-Alaska, also known as the Western Arctic Reserve, is the largest tract of unprotected, relatively pristine public land in the United States. The wilderness values of the western Arctic rank among the highest on the continent. The reserve provides important habitat for many species of fish and wildlife, including threatened polar bears, brown bears, caribou, wolverines, beluga whales, walrus, spotted seals, waterfowl, seabirds, shorebirds and one of the densest populations of nesting raptors in the world.

Big Oil won't hesitate to turn this vast wilderness into a sprawling industrial complex if given the chance -- but we can make a difference.

The Bureau of Land Management has officially started a new planning process for the entire Western Arctic Reserve. This is a great opportunity to tell the Obama administration to protect the Arctic from dirty industrial fossil-fuel development. Please take action today.

EPA needs to hear from you

Hello,

When you burn biomass (trees and other plants) to create electricity, the resulting pollution harms our local communities and ecosystems while also contributing to global warming. The forestry industry stands to benefit from the EPA ignoring this harmful pollution, but we can help our planet out by telling the EPA we want biomass included.

Can you join me in taking action and pressing EPA to count the carbon in biomass? Recent studies indicate that some biomass can even cause more global warming pollution than coal – so we can’t afford to stay silent.

Tell EPA that biomass emissions matter!

Iraq Combat Continues: Despite Formal End, U.S. Joins Baghdad Battle

The so-called end of combat operations is a fine example of double-speak, a tiresome fact. Saying that you are keeping your promises is not the same thing as actually keeping them. When will Obama actually do what he said he would do? When will he do anything to distinguish himself from his predecessor? US out of Iraq! Out of Afghanistan!

GNU-Darwin Action: ACTA Action: Call on Obama to end the secrecy, r eject the treaty

unknownname.out (0 KB)

------ Forwarded message ------
From: "Free Software Foundation"
Subject: ACTA Action: Call on Obama to end the secrecy, reject the treaty
Two weeks ago, we delivered over 4,000 of your signatures on our [ACTA
petition][1] to negotiators meeting in Washington, D.C.

The US government still hasn't gotten the message. President Obama and
his administration are blocking release of the full text of ACTA. They
don't want the public to know what the negotiators are up to, because
they know we wouldn't stand for it.

James Love, director of Knowledge Ecology International, has published
an [article in the Huffington Post][2] today calling attention to
Obama's hypocritical secrecy on this:

[-]
> It is not an unreasonable request that the Obama administration
> join the 37 other countries in the negotiation to support the
> release of the ACTA text to the public, so we can see what the
> negotiators are up to. After all, the Obama Administration does
> share its positions in the ACTA negotiations with corporate
> lobbyists.

It's important to go a step further than James Love and also reject
the propaganda term ["intellectual property"][3] when criticizing the
agreement, because the term itself rigs the debate in favor of these
same corporate lobbyists.

Please take a minute to read the article, and write to Obama at
urging him to end the hypocrisy
and release the text of the agreement.

We don't need the current text to know ACTA is bad. We know from
previous releases of the text -- by other countries -- that the treaty
is [full of measures that attack the public's freedom][4]. But forcing
governments to have this conversation in public would make it much
more difficult for them to succeed.

We've also still left our petition open for signing, so we can deliver
more signatures at the next opportunity -- please continue telling
your friends, colleagues and family about it so we can stop this
assault on our freedom.

# Take Action

- Read and share James Love's article:
- Demand that Obama release the current text of ACTA:

Another rig explodes in the Gulf

Hey there,

How many more explosions will it take to end offshore drilling?

We have to stop this. I just signed this petition telling President Obama to drop ALL offshore drilling plans and focus on clean energy instead. Can you do the same thing?

Tell the EPA: Protect Our Families from Toxic #Coal Ash - Disaster in Tennessee - #BP Oil Spill #boycottbp

Hello,

I just signed a petition to urge the EPA to protect our streams, our drinking water and our health from coal ash contamination.

As you may know, coal ash is a toxic solid waste produced by coal-burning power plants. It's shockingly unregulated and it is piling up at more than 600 dump sites across the country.

Just over a year and a half ago, the town of Harriman, Tennessee was engulfed by coal ash when a holding pond at a local power plant ruptured. A black tidal wave ripped homes off their foundations, killed birds and fish, and contaminated drinking water supplies and nearby rivers with a toxic soup of arsenic, mercury, lead and other carcinogenic chemicals.

The Tennessee coal ash disaster is just one shocking example of how coal ash afflicts communities. Coal ash dumps routinely leach toxins into drinking water, increasing cancer, learning disabilities, birth defects and other illnesses.

Thankfully, the EPA is currently considering the first-ever federal safeguards for coal ash disposal. Our voices are critical to achieving strong protections for communities, because greedy coal and utility lobbyists are pressuring the EPA to maintain the toxic status quo.

Please join me in speaking out. You can take action here: http://action.foe.org/coalashcomments

Thanks for considering this!
