Leaked WikiLeaks Cable: 2005 Democracy Now! Report on Haiti Killings Irked U...

via Democracy Now! by mail@democracynow.org (Democracy Now!) on 6/24/11

Democracy Now! is mentioned in a U.S. diplomatic cable released by WikiLeaks that cites our 2005 report on a deadly raid in the poor neighborhood of Cité Soleil by United Nations forces. “You accurately reported on what was going on and the embassy was alarmed by it,” says our guest, longtime Haiti correspondent Dan Coughlin. “What they were upset about is there wasn’t PR push back on Democracy Now! by the U.N.” Another cable shows U.S. Secretary of State Hillary Clinton called embassies around the world to tell them to “get the narrative right” with editors and fight negative portrayals of U.S. deployment in Haiti after the 2010 earthquake. Tell Congress: No antibiotics in our food

Dear Friend,

An outbreak in Germany this month of an antibiotic resistant E. coli strain killed 35 people and infected thousands - and serves as a somber reminder of the necessity of effective antibiotics.

Yet antibiotics continue to decline in effectiveness -- and overuse of antibiotics in the livestock industry is a major reason. Alarmingly, up to 70% of all antibiotics sold in the U.S. are used on industrial farms in healthy food animals.

This massive overprescription is breeding new strains of antibiotic-resistant bacteria like E. coli and MRSA, a type of staph infection that now kills more people in the U.S. every year than AIDS.

The trend is frightening. Congress is now considering The Preservation of Antibiotics for Medical Treatment Act to phase out the rampant overuse by the livestock industry of medically important antibiotics in healthy animals.

I just sent a message to my Senators and Representative in Congress. Please join me and urge them to pass this vital legislation:

AT&T and Comcast about to agree to Internet censorship deal

Friends-

Completely over the top, even compared to everything else we're up against: Entertainment industry sources are leaking that they've convinced Internet service providers to start restricting people's web access. If you're accused of downloading or streaming three files they'll consider messing with your Internet connection -- and maybe even decide what sites you're allowed to visit.

Will you help fight the proposal? Just click here to email AT&T and Comcast:

http://act.demandprogress.org/sign/three_strikes/?page=121&referring_akid=719...

The MPAA and RIAA have convinced companies like Comcast, AT&T, and others to voluntarily create a "Three Strikes" policy -- yes, that's really what they are calling it. CNET reports that your Internet service provider will respond to online file sharing with censorship tools like: * "Throttling down" your internet bandwidth and speed;

* Limiting your access to the Web;

* Controlling what websites you are allowed to visit;

* And requiring you to attend pirate school to be educated on copyright law.

Will you act now to fight this new ridiculous proposal. Just click here to email AT&T and Comcast to urge them not to censor the Internet:

WikiLeaks: Saudi Crackdown on Shiites Has Echoes of Human Rights Abuses in B...

via (title unknown) by jon on 6/23/11

WASHINGTON — This year's harsh crackdown on Shiite Muslims in Bahrain follows the playbook that Sunni Muslim-ruled Saudi Arabia used against Shiites in its own Eastern Province as recently as two years ago, secret State Department cables show.

Some of the officials named in the cables as responsible for the 2009 Eastern Province crackdown now are advising Bahrain's leaders.

Speak Up for a Future With Wolves

The U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service is conducting its first comprehensive look, since 1978, at wolf taxonomy and conservation status throughout the United States, and it's asking for public comments on how to go forward.

The Fish and Wildlife Service proposes removing gray wolves throughout the upper Midwest and in the eastern United States from the federal endangered species list. The agency is also considering designating and protecting a distinct population of wolves in the Pacific Northwest that includes western Washington and Oregon, Northern California and the Sierra Nevada.

Please speak up to voice your support for maintaining current protections and for developing a national wolf recovery plan to ensure that life-affirming wolf howls will be heard from the Olympic Peninsula of Washington to the San Juan Mountains of Colorado to the Maine woods -- and in many wild nooks and crannies elsewhere as well.

Visit http://action.biologicaldiversity.org/p/dia/action/public/?action_KEY=7095 to take action now.

Letter to DOJ: Wikileaks grand jury

I am writing to ask that the grand jury proceedings against Wikileaks
and their supporters be halted. These proceedings are badly misguided
and a waste of time. It is better to solve the problems that have been
rightly illuminated by Wikileaks and other like minded people, who
should be congratulated for their courage, not prosecuted. The free
and open internet demands that communications which are not to our
liking be tolerated, otherwise even science itself is impossible. Moreover, such activities are protected by the First Amendment.

Tell Obama: Put solar on the White House!

Dear Friend,

There hasn't been much for environmentalists to cheer about when it comes to federal action to combat climate change.

But back in October of 2010, we did win a small, but symbolically important victory. The Obama Administration committed to install solar panels and a solar hot water heater on the White House by spring of 2011.

June 21 is the official end of spring - but there are no solar panels on the White House, yet. It's time for President Obama to make good on his promise.

I just signed a petition asking Obama to stand by his commitment and put solar panels on the White House! Join me and add your name too:

Dear Michael L.,

Thank you for joining us in demanding that the U.S. Food and Drug Administration keep inadequate and potentially harmful sunscreens off the shelves. We are meeting with the FDA soon and are so close to having 50,000 signatures to show that there is overwhelming support for regulating sunscreens -- we only need 12,278 more signatures by midnight tonight.

Here are three things you can do right now to help us spread the word:

:: Forward this email to your friends and family and ask them to click here to sign our petition by midnight tonight, http://tinyurl.com/684pupc!
:: Share on Facebook: It's inexcusable that the U.S. FDA has stalled on the release of sunscreen safety regulations for 33 years. So I just told them to start protecting consumers with sunscreen safety regulations now! Join me, it's easy (thx, EWG Action Fund!): http://bit.ly/ipZp8H
:: Tweet it: I just told the US FDA to finally issue sunscreen safety regulations. 33 yrs is too long to let us burn. Speak up NOW: http://bit.ly/ipZp8H

Four of five sunscreens analyzed in EWG's Sunscreen Guide don't do the job. This is too important for the FDA to wait another minute.

Dear Jane,

In 1978, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration began to develop its first-ever sunscreen safety regulations. Thirty-three years later, the job still isn't done. That's outrageous.

The FDA hasn't protected us from the sunscreen industry's false claims or use of potentially hazardous ingredients. But we know you care, which is why EWG has just released its fifth annual Sunscreen Guide. You should have the best information possible to help you choose products that will protect you and your family from burns and skin cancer and keep you safer in the sun. Since there are no regulations, the industry doesn't have to verify that its sunscreens work or provide adequate UVA protection or even check its "waterproof" claims. I need you to stand with me today in telling the FDA that it's more than time to implement the proposed regulations. Please join us by midnight June 9 -- before we deliver your signatures to the FDA!

Click here to sign EWG Action Fund's petition demanding the FDA implement its proposed sunscreen regulations and keep dangerous products from making it onto store shelves, http://tinyurl.com/64t84ha.

In 2007, the FDA released its most recent version of the proposed sunscreen regulations, but they have yet to be implemented. While the FDA has been dragging its feet, you and your family are being left out to be burned. EWG's analysis of more than 500 beach and sport sunscreens with SPF ratings of 30 and higher finds that about 60 percent provide inadequate UVA protection. Many sunscreen makers still lace their products with a form of vitamin A called retinyl palmitate, ignoring recent research by the FDA indicating that the chemical speeds up the growth of tumors and lesions when used on sun-exposed skin. There's more bad news. Nearly one in six beach and sport sunscreens claim SPFs higher than 50+. But studies show that high-SPF users are exposed to as much or more UV rays than people who use lower SPF products. Why? Those big numbers give people a false sense of security. They wait too long before reapplying and stay out too long.

This is unacceptable. The FDA began taking steps -- 33 years ago! -- to get the sunscreen industry under control. It is more than time for the agency to finish what it started. Stand with me today, and with the EWG Action Fund, if you want safer, better sunscreens on the market.

Reject the PROTECT IP Act

The PROTECT IP Act (PIPA) is a threatening sequel to last year's COICA Internet censorship bill that would -- like its predecessor -- invite Internet security risks, threaten online speech, and hamper Internet innovation.

Please consider urging your members of Congress to reject this dangerous bill:
