Project News for GNU-Darwin Distribution
GNU-Darwin-ppc Beta2 pre-release
Here is the ppc pre-release. Now, we can imagine a much simpler One step installer for Mac OS X users, like this.
curl -O http://gnu-darwin.sourceforge.net/packages/ppc/ppc/pkg_add
chmod 755 pkg_add
./pkg_add -fvr g-d-package-install
With the exception of the pkg binaries themselves, the vendor tree is left untouched. After that, it is platform independent, so the job could be handed off to a generic getPackages script, like this. It is familiar to BSD users, but it is non-intrusive to the base system.

http://gnu-darwin.sourceforge.net/packages/x86
http://gnu-darwin.sourceforge.net/packages/??? (take yer pick!)
New architectures can be added without modification of the code base in most cases.
Feel free to try it out and experiment. For people who have kept their packages current, things should go much faster. There are still some missing packages, but almost everything should work fine. Let us know, if there are any serious problems (other than packages missing). Beta2 is almost ready, so please give us your input now.

GNU-Darwin-x86 Beta2 pre-release
x86 users can sample some of the functionality from the upcoming Beta 2 release. First download the pre-release package manager. (Don't try this with OSX!).
pkg-add \
http://gnu-darwin.sourceforge.net/x86/packages/All/g-d-package-install.x86-2a.1.x86.tgz
Then, try the following command.
pkg_add -fvr zorro
If you have some tolerance for error messages, and some bandwidth and disk space, then try some of the following. The remote and auto-dependency functionality should be fully working now, although there are still a few missing packages.
pkg_add -fvr gimp
pkg_add -fvr windowmaker
pkg_add -fvr gnome
ppc users can download and inspect the proposed file structure as follows.
wget \
http://gnu-darwin.sourceforge.net/x86/packages/All/g-d-package-install.x86-2a.1.x86.tgz
tar -ztf g-d-package-install.x86-2a.1.x86.tgz
If you are interested in particulars, everything is in CVS, and there is also important info on the x86 ports and packages page.
http://cvs.sourceforge.net/cgi-bin/viewcvs.cgi/gnu-darwin/4Darwin-x86/
http://gnu-darwin.sourceforge.net/x86/
This is beta 2 candidate 1, so any comments and input are definitely welcome. We will be rolling this and host of other refinements into the ppc beta 2 release as soon as the current round of x86 building is finished. Cheers!

proclus

GNU-Darwin-OSF1 (alpha)
A number of binary packages for Tru64 Alpha computers have been added to the Distribution. These include most of what is need to make your experience more GNU-like, and several watershed GNU-Darwin applications as well. The package manager is not ready for this platform, so just untar these files accordingly (/usr/bin/tar). (Python2.2 and other good stuff is included in the PyMOL package.)
