  • GNU-Darwin: Shell, Web Hosting, Email Access Accounts

I would like to remind our users, sponsors, and friends to subscribe to a GNU-Darwin Shell, Email, and Web Hosting Access Account, and spread the word too!

    http://www.gnu-darwin.org/index.php?page=about-webmail

    http://webmail.gnu-darwin.org/

I find that having a shell access account out in cyberspace is very
convenient for various network and software testing chores and
indispensable to my work, both at home and at the University. It
includes Apache web server and OpenSSH access to a full ports tree
loaded with great software like FFmpeg, ImageMagick, netcat, fetchmail,
many scripting languages like Perl, Python, Ruby, PHP, and all password
    protected.

GNU-Darwin internet services, now include email, shell access, total SSL
encryption, SMTP-on-LAN, web hosting, web mail, IMAP, virtual domains
and flexible subdomains as well. Given all that we provide, this is a
deal that is hard to beat. The first month is free, and thereafter it
is only $15 per year. We also provide free access to GNU-Darwin coders
    and contributors.

These are not mere email or web hosting accounts; for example, if you
wanted a new user name, webpage, gnu-darwin subdomain, or something
special, we often include it at no additional charge. Some of
our developers have made excellent use of these accounts, so that
they are among our top referrers. Here are their web account links, so
that you can see what is possible. Cheers!

    http://yves.gnu-darwin.org/
    http://plumber.gnu-darwin.org/

In addition, more information about these accounts and everything else
that the distro has to offer is now described in our new User Guide and
Cookbook, which is also worth a read.

  • GNU-Darwin: software up and coming, Inkscape

I have done a survey of popular free software projects, and I am
pleased to report that we are covering the bases on the most
important projects. In addition there is one new project which stands
out as particularly useful, receiving attention, and which you should be
made aware of. If anyone would like to use the program, it is probably
trivial to install it on our work stations.

The name of this program is Inkscape. Inkscape is an svg editor, which
was used to create thousands of the images that are available on
Wikipedia. It is a scalable vector graphics editor, like Adobe
Illustrator, Corel Draw, Freehand, or Xara X. I had a look at some of
the images that were created with this package, and it produces some
very impressive results, due to the fact that the images are recorded in
a resolution independent way, unlike the raster images produced by most
molecular graphics programs, as well as GIMP and Photoshop. svg is the
native format of Inkscape, which makes it a very useful program for
dividing svg files, a common graphics format on the web, into their
parts. Here is a link to the project home page and SourceForge summary.

    http://www.inkscape.org/
    http://sourceforge.net/projects/inkscape/?abmode=1

Other important projects, which we are already using, and for which we
have provided advice and user training are as follows.

    openssh
    secure logins, etc

    imagemagick
graphics suite for display and batch manipulation of images

    ffmpeg
multimedia inter-conversions with piping and streaming

    mozilla firefox
    web browser, etc

Although we have provided quite alot of support for these projects
already, they are very powerful programs, and it is unlikely that we
are tapping their full potential. We should also add Inkscape to the
list, IMHO. If you feel that we need additional support or
documentation of these programs, be sure and let me know.

  • [FSF] Why free software and Apple's iPhone don't mix

FSF has a new article about the broken by design Apple iPhone including 3G.

    http://www.fsf.org/blogs/community/why-free-software-and-apples-iphone-dont-mix

Importantly, they note that the iPhone Developer Program License
Agreement is incompatible with GPLv3. Given that about 90% of GPL
covered projects have gone over to GPLv3, this is an interesting
restriction on Apple's part. The freedom to modify and share software
is a paramount component of software freedom, which Apple is restricting
for iPhone users. This article is an important read.

There is a worm in the apple cart, and it is upset. I'd suggest a look
at FreeRunner, which I have had my eye on for a long time.
