You can call anyone crazy, and it can be a false pretext for the violation of gun rights. Due process is required to violate fundamental rights. Adjudicated mentally ill are already forbidden from owning guns. The proposed measures, such as red flag laws, are a trojan horse against the rights of everyone. In Maryland we have many examples of people using such laws and court system to take away people's property. Slap the crazy label on a person, and the courts help you steal their property. Current proposals are just bad policy, allowing rights to be violated at the whim of those who have something to gain from it· People with a genuine illness will avoid treatment, so that their rights won't be violated· Current proposals would not have prevented recent shootings. It's an absurd over reach.
I'm vehemently against these knee-jerk, ill-advised gun control proposals. Protect our RIGHTS! It is the same argument every time, exploiting the deaths of our fellow countrymen in order to attack our protected rights. There are millions of mentally ill people in this country, who are not a danger to anyone. These proposals will only create a stigma, piling on with an attack on the rights and an insult. The fact that you think a person is crazy does not remove their need for self-defense. It's a right. This is the selfsame reason why the gun right is protected in so that it won't be violated so frivolously. Let's be honest. Our grief is disturbed by those who exploit it to attack our God-given rights. Enough!
