End of Twitter

Friends,

It's alive! And it's a nightmare.

The rumors were true: The new Blacklist Bill could effectively destroy YouTube, Twitter, and other sites that rely on user-generated content by making the sites' owners legally responsible for content their users post.

It also includes provisions that would make it a felony to stream unlicensed content -- including cover band performances, karaoke videos, video game play-throughs, and more.

It's a grab-bag of Halloween goodies for a handful of big corporations -- but for us it's Frankenstein's monster, cobbled together from half-born bills, set to suffocate free speech and innovation and terrorize consumers and Internet users.

Will you click here to ask your Congressmember to oppose the legislation?

EFF: Take Action | top the Internet Blacklist Legislation - #fsf #law #acta #arts #dmca #free #geek #open #coica #music #movies #piracy #source #freedom #radical

Dear friend,

I just emailed Congress to urge them to oppose the Internet Blacklist Legislation, known as the PROTECT-IP Act in the Senate and the Stop Online Piracy Act (SOPA) in the House. This legislation seeks to give the executive branch power to conduct slash-and-burn campaigns against websites that allegedly host – or even link to – content that infringes on intellectual property rights. That would “disappear” whole domain names, fundamentally undermining Internet security, and/or choke off their financial support. The Internet Blacklist Legislation puts more sites than ever at risk, effectively upending the DMCA safe harbors that have been crucial to the growth of Internet innovation and creativity.

Sadly, these short-sighted and dangerous bills won’t do much to stop online infringement – but they will jeopardize our ability to speak and read online with the kind of freedom we cherish in the offline world. Deep-pocketed Hollywood lobbyists are aggressively pushing to control and censor the open Internet, willing to sacrifice free speech and our Internet culture in hopes of controlling how people view their movies and products.

We need to stop this bill before it goes any further. Will you contact your representatives in Congress and urge them to oppose the Internet Blacklist Legislation? Visit: http://ping.fm/AHc7D

I really enjoyed GA tonight, and looking forward to the bicycle parade. Democracy is hard work. Thanks to everyone who makes this work.

Our thoughts have been with the encampments who have been abused by authorities, and with those who defended liberty today.  Many here are tired and in their tents now. It has been a big day for Occupy Baltimore.  Sleep tight.

One reminder, freedom of assembly includes camping.  Don't forget.

Let the #occupychicago movement stay in Grant Park without arrests

Hi,

Don't let the Chicago movement be forced out of Chicago. Let those who occupy the streets have a base where they can stay, regardless that the park arbitrarily closes at 11 p.m.

So I signed a petition to Rahm Emanuel, Mayor of Chicago, which says:

"Rahm Emanuel, stop the mass arrests of protesters in Grant Park. Respect their right to peacefully assemble, and allow them to have a base to protest from. Don't let this end like 1968."

Will you sign this petition? Click here:

Tell Lisa Jackson and the EPA: We're counting on you to oppose Keystone XL

Dear Friend,

It's clear by now that there's simply no hope of the State Department issuing a legitimate evaluation of the Keystone XL pipeline.

Fortunately, there is some hope: The EPA, which is one of nine agencies that gets to weigh in on the process.

Sometime in the next week, the EPA will issue its review of the State Department's Final Environmental Impact Report. Strong opposition from his own EPA will be essential if we're going to convince President Obama to reject this horrible pipeline.

I just signed a petition to EPA Chief Lisa Jackson asking her to reject the State Department's sham review of Keystone XL. I hope you'll join me. You can learn more and sign the petition at the link below:

DFA: #occupywallstreet bumper stickers - #p2 #ows #15oct #occupy #usdor #occupysf #occupydenver #usrevolution

One of the most powerful things about the Occupy Wall Street movement is that it's leaderless. No one person or organization controls it, drives it or can take credit for the movement that's continuing to build everyday. Most importantly, that also means no one person or organization can stop it.

That's why big corporations and their right-wing allies are freaking out. They're scared of the movement that's sweeping the country because they know it's real. It's organic. And it has the power to win because it's clear we're not going away until change happens to improve the lives of the 99%.

Here at DFA, we know that it's not our job to try to take over this movement or take credit for its work. We're here to help grow and support the work that people across the country are doing organically. So, when thousands of DFA members started writing in to ask us to make "We are the 99 percent" bumper stickers so they could show their support, we knew we had to do it.

Get your FREE "We are the 99 percent" bumper sticker right now.

You can put these stickers wherever you want to show your support for this incredible movement -- on your car, in your window, on your laptop...

Whether you're in a city with a occupation or, better yet, in an area where there isn't one -- you can use our stickers to show people everywhere that this is a movement with huge national support. We can show them exactly what the 99 percent looks like.

So, sign up to get your free sticker right now, or get a pack of 10 for $10.

Help support and grow the occupation -- Get a free "We are the 99 percent" sticker today.

Thank you for everything you do.

Speak Up for Arctic Wilderness

Right now, Interior Secretary Ken Salazar is asking for your input on a plan for the Arctic National Wildlife Refuge that, for the first time, could recommend wilderness protection for the entire refuge, including the coastal plain. The 19-million-acre refuge is the heart of the Arctic, boasting rich biological diversity and breathtaking landscapes. Despite its crucial biological importance and natural beauty, oil companies and their friends in Congress have been pushing to drill in the refuge for decades. Now is our chance to stop them: This plan will guide how the Arctic Refuge will be managed for the next 15 years or more.

A wilderness recommendation could protect this unparalleled area and the abundant wildlife that depends on it -- including polar bears, grizzly bears, wolves, musk oxen, caribou and millions of birds from around the globe. But to make sure the final version of the refuge plan includes a wilderness recommendation, we must demonstrate overwhelming support for protecting the refuge. If we speak with a loud and united voice, we'll be sending a strong message that Secretary Salazar can't ignore.

Defend the Right to Protest in NYC! - #ows #usdor #occupy

Dear Michael L.

The Occupy Wall Street (OWS) movement proves that dissent is alive and well in the U.S.  With protests in cities and towns all over the country, the movement is also giving us a pretty good picture of where freedom rings in the U.S. .... and where officials are trying to snuff it out.

We just got an emergency message from OWS in New York City.  They've had problems with the police since the protest started, and now it looks like the Mayor is trying to close the protest down.

He claims he wants to clean the park, and protesters will have to be out of the park by 7 a.m. tomorrow morning.  He says he'll allow the protesters back into the park, but without tarps or sleeping bags.. and no lying down either.  He knows these rules will severely impact the protest, his intentions are clear: to bring the protests to an end.

The Mayor has used this tactic before to shut down protests, and we don't want to let him do it again.

The right to dissent has become a fragile thing in New York City,
let's do what we can to protect it.

Please call the Mayor, tell him to respect the protesters' First Amendment rights and not to interfere with the peaceful protest.

Call: 212-NEW-YORK (or New Yorkers can call 311).  You can send a text message to the Mayor at 311692

In Solidarity,

Sue

ActBlue — #OccupyWallStreet yard signs - #occupybaltimore #ows #taxes #usdor #occupy #unions #tarsands #OccupyUSA

Occupy Wall Street hasn't made specific demands yet but they've already won their first big fight -- big banks and their right-wing allies in Congress have taken notice... and they're scared of what they see.

Occupy Wall Street has inspired occupations in hundreds of cities across the country -- from Atlanta to Boston to Los Angeles. Now, it's time to expand the fight beyond major cities and into the suburbs, the countryside -- everywhere.

The problem is local occupations outside of major cities may never be able to reach the kind of critical mass that will turn heads and force elected leaders to respond. Yet small towns and rural areas standing up and getting involved is the most likely way to help build this movement to the next level.

So we've spent the week asking members of Occupy Wall Street and DFA what's the best thing we could do right now to help build the movement for the long term. The answer was clear. Help us show support for Occupy Wall Street everywhere -- including our own front yard. That's why we put together "We are the 99 percent" lawn signs so Americans everywhere can join the movement.

Start your own occupation to support and grow the movement -- Get an Occupy Wall Street yard sign right now.

Normally we give merchandise away for free, but yard signs are expensive.

It costs $1.29 to print each sign. It costs $2.50 to package them. It can cost up to $9.75 to ship them, depending on where you live. And when buying signs in large quantities, it costs up to $1,000 just to add a second color to the sign.

When it's all said and done -- each sign costs $13.76 to print, package and ship directly to your home. So, we're asking for a contribution of at least $16 to help cover all the costs. If you contribute more, we'll use the additional money raised to support our continued involvement, spreading the message, and supporting the people on the ground in New York and beyond who started this bold movement.

It's October. In New York, Boston, and even Atlanta, Occupy Wall Street needs sleeping bags, blankets, medical supplies and so much more. Making a contribution today not only gets you a yard sign so you can show your support, it will help us deliver more of the resources that people on the ground need right now.

Get your "We are the 99 percent" yard sign right now.

Thank you for everything you do.

Stop the corporate attack on our rights

Lurking in the fine print of contracts, corporations often insert a “forced arbitration” clause, which essentially strips consumers and employees of the right to hold them accountable in court.

Instead, consumers and employees who have been hurt or ripped off are forced into a private system that favors corporations.

I just told my members of Congress to stop the corporate attack on our rights and end forced arbitration.

Dear Friend,

Does your food contain GMOs? Incredibly, we really don't know.

An estimated 80% of processed foods sold in the U.S. contain genetically modified organisms. Yet GMO foods are totally unlabeled as such!

For the past 20 years, Americans have been denied their basic right to know because of a flawed regulatory system that has relied on corporate science without adequate peer-reviewed testing and scientific oversight.

40 countries already have GMO labeling requirements - but not the U.S. It's time for that to change.

I just signed a petition demanding that the FDA require labeling for GMO foods to Americans can know what we're eating. Learn more and add your name here:

Would You Trade a Redwood Forest for a Glass of Pinot Noir?

Two wineries are proposing to clear-cut more than 1,900 acres of redwoods and Douglas firs in Northern California near a critical salmon stream in order to plant new vineyards. The Spanish company Artesa (Codorniu Napa) wants to clear-cut 154 acres of coastal redwood forest near Annapolis, Calif., for grapes. Premier Pacific Vineyards has petitioned the state to destroy thousands of acres of nearby redwoods to cultivate more Pinot Noir grapes and build 60 high-end residential estates.

The two projects represent one of the largest forest-to-vineyard conversions in California history. The California Department of Forestry's draft "environmental impact report" claims the project will have no significant adverse environmental or cultural impacts.

The Center for Biological Diversity sees it differently. The second-growth redwood and fir forests near Annapolis in Sonoma County are recovering from historic logging. Vineyard conversion would harm stream flows, water quality and habitat in the Gualala River, home to endangered salmon, steelhead trout and other imperiled wildlife.

Tell the Department of Forestry you oppose destroying coastal redwood forests, endangered salmon streams and American Indian heritage for financial gain.

Execution by secret WH committee

via OpEdNews on 10/6/11

Even for those deeply cynical about American political culture: wouldn't you have thought a few years ago that having the President create a White House panel to place Americans on a CIA hit list -- in secret, without a shred of due process -- would be a bridge too far?

GNU-Darwin Action: #Banksters

I believe that banking institutions are more dangerous to our liberties than standing armies.
Thomas Jefferson

Wars and standing armies do not come out of nowhere, and the banking organizations are the ones who provide the money to field the troops.  This fact is substantiated by the lending patterns to the US government following on 9/11, which was a major factor precipitating the financial crisis.  Apparently, the banking organizations felt comfortable enough with the dubious war pretext in order to provide the funds.

One wonders what else they are into?  Of course, the nasty PR campaigns come to mind, in which people become convinced to hold views that are contrary to their own interests, and which are profitable only to an already wealthy few.  Who knows what other awful things they are doing!

I will confess to past reticence to attribute malignity to the US financial institutions, because it seemed too conspiratorial to me.  No longer. I was outraged by the foreclosure mill scandals, which demonstrated that money greed is more important to these moral cretins than actual peoples lives.  It is crucial to understand that they do not deserve our sympathy or protection. We should do whatever we can to support the #Occupy movement in their aims to hold the banks accountable.  It deserves action.

Tell the Super Committee to end the big oil bailout

Every year Congress hands out billions in subsidies to the fossil fuel industry -- money that wealthy oil, gas and coal companies don't need. Those billions could be used instead to pay for important domestic programs at a time when Congress is grappling with ways to reduce the deficit.

With our country facing massive cuts to education and health care programs, we can't afford to waste tens of billions of dollars in giveaways to the oil, coal and gas industries. Eliminating these handouts could reduce our national debt by $121 billion over the next decade.

A congressional "Super Committee" is working to propose $1.5 trillion in cuts by Nov. 23. Will you join me in telling the Super Committee to end the $121 billion in subsidies to the oil, gas and coal industries? Just click here to sign on:

Stand with Occupy Wall Street - #occupy #ows #usdor

Dear Friend,

Not a single banker has gone to jail for crimes that led to the financial meltdown. But now over 1,000 protesters have been arrested in the inspiring Occupy Wall Street protest in New York City.

The occupation of Wall Street has inspired a nationwide movement in the spirit of Wisconsin.

But there has been a powerful backlash against peaceful protesters who are using both their right to public assembly and tactics of nonviolent civil disobedience to call attention to the fact that our government has bailed out the wealthiest Americans but has done little to help middle and working class Americans who have lost their jobs and had their homes foreclosed on.

The protest is building momentum with a huge solidarity march today that CREDO members, progressive organizations and labor are joining. However the very existence of Occupy Wall Street could be endangered by strongarm NYPD tactics aimed at intimidating protesters and ending their three week stand against the big Wall Street banks.

I told Mayor Michael Bloomberg and Police Commissioner Raymond Kelly to respect the Occupy Wall Street protesters' constitutional right to peaceful assembly. You can, too, at the link below. http://ping.fm/B5SKv
